Squirrelled away in everyday corners of Australia, people pen stories to intrigue, to uplift or to edify. It’s no different in the New England area of New South Wales. Once a month, the High Country Writers, a group of avid authors come together in Deepwater to inspire and encourage each other’s writing efforts.
High Country Writers have taken the plunge from writing to producing a printed result by publishing a book of eclectic micro-stories. Their recent collective work, Diving Into Deep Water, has been published by High Country Books and will be officially launched on July 19th at the Makers Shed in Deepwater. The book’s premise is to see how a random phrase can be translated into different stories by different writers.
Diving Into Deep Water fits this brief perfectly. Short, short stories that intrigue, uplift or edify in equal measure. It’s like dipping into a box of liquorice allsorts with your eyes shut. You don’t know what you’ll get, but you know you’re going to enjoy it.
You could read this in one sitting (totally overdosing on the liquorice allsorts) or take your time and plunge in when you have the time. It’s difficult to pick a standout story because the standard of writing is incredibly high and the variety of genres (including some poems) keeps the intrigue happening.
This is a charming book. It appeals, it entrances, and it’s a fine read.
