The Glen Innes Huskies are preparing to launch their 2025 touch football season, with strong growth in player numbers and representative honours highlighting the sport’s rapid rise in the region. All events are held at Wilson Park in Glen Innes.
Since affiliating with NSW Touch Football last year, the local competition has gained access to statewide representative pathways, referee and coaching development, and organised tournaments. Club president Gus Macrae said affiliation was essential to give local players exposure. “We could see the talent and potential of so many kids in our town – they were missing out and needed to be seen,” he said.
That potential is already being realised. Several Glen Innes players earned selection in Northern Eagles squads at this year’s Junior Championships and State Cup. Among them, teenagers Mylie Doust and Paige Floyd will compete at the National Youth Championships in Coffs Harbour in October, representing the Northern Eagles against the nation’s best.
Locally, the Huskies’ competition has expanded, with more than 100 juniors registering last season. The club also hosted its first affiliated gala day in August, attracting schools from across the district and reducing travel costs for families.
The 2025/26 season will feature competitions for all age groups:
- Junior comps (Years 3–6): Thursdays 4:45pm
- Little Huskies (5–7 years): Thursdays
- Senior Ladies & Men’s comps: Thursdays from 6pm
- Senior Mixed comp: Tuesdays from Oct 14, 6pm at Wilson Park
A free “Come and Try” day is scheduled for Thursday, September 25, with NSW Touch representatives running skills demonstrations. Coach and referee courses will also be held in the lead-up.
The Huskies committee says the game’s appeal lies in fitness, teamwork and social connection, with touch football offering both pathways to elite level and a family-friendly summer sport.
