Preview: Chapel Theatre’s ‘We Will Rock You’ Set to Bring the House Down

The Glen Innes Arts Council is gearing up for opening night this Friday, August 29, with a high-energy production of We Will Rock You. A full dress-rehearsal yesterday delivered polished vocals, a lively mix of acting and music, and a showcase of local talent.

WWRY1Directed by Jenny Sloman, the musical transports audiences into the future to “iPlanet”, a world stripped of individuality and, most importantly, music. Ruling this dystopia is the menacing Killer Queen (Naomi Bain) and her ruthless commander Khashoggi (Kat Sharman). Their empire faces resistance from the “Bohemians”, led by Buddy (Sean O’Hara), who believe a Dreamer will one day rediscover the power of rock. Nathan Skinner, as the Dreamer, and his love interest, Scaramouche (Catie Turner), ground the story with spirited performances that resonate.

The production features standout vocals backed by a live band, under the musical direction of Kath Duddy, whose energy blurs the line between theatre and rock concert. Audience favourites such as We Are the Champions and We Will Rock You promise to be highlights, while Tahleia Gerlofsma adds warmth to her ballads, and Jay Post brings groove and charm to the ensemble.

Choreographer Lindy Alt and her dance team keep the stage in motion, supported by bold lighting, clever staging, and vibrant costumes. The production captures Queen’s playful camp while still landing its emotional notes.

Equally striking is the sense of community. Producer Genevieve Byrne has rallied a team of volunteers, from crew to costume designers, whose shared passion is evident in the synergy of the performance.

Glen Innes certainly has some big voices, and the audience’s enthusiasm was unmistakable – clapping, foot-tapping, cheering, and even a little singing along. The finale, capped by Bohemian Rhapsody, the number many had been waiting for, brought the house down with a rousing finish.

We Will Rock You promises to be more than just a jukebox musical; it’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the enduring magic of Queen’s music.

Verdict: A lively, polished production that is ready to rock the stage.

Although online bookings have closed, tickets are still available from Carelles, 250 Grey St, Glen Innes – cash only.
