Four Tamworth Awards Nominations For Local Muso

Matt Scullion

Glencoe resident and musician, Matt Scullion, has been nominated for four awards at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2025, two of them in the People’s Choice and two in the Tamworth Songwriter’s Association Awards. The nominations are for a song he wrote and recorded about Northern Territory icon, Ted Egan.

Matt’s song, Beer Box Man, documents Ted’s musical journey.  When Matt originally opted to write a song about Ted, he re-read his autobiography, Outback Songman: My Life, and also met with the legendary Alice Springs resident.  Matt found that there were so many aspects to Ted and his various careers and, to do him justice, he decided to concentrate on Ted’s musical career and his use of the Fosterphone (the beer box of the title).  Ted features in the music video of the song, playing his beer carton rhythms.

Matt has had a long musical career.  He started writing songs when he picked up his first guitar at the age of sixteen.  He has played extensively in and around Glen Innes.  He has previously been nominated for other awards at Tamworth and won a Golden Guitar for song of the year in 2019.  If you’re attending the Country Music Festival, Matt will be performing in Tamworth on Thursday 23rd of January at the Tamworth Golf Club.

Many in the Glen Innes and surrounding communities will be wishing him well at the awards, and hoping that he takes out at least one of them in honour of his own achievements, and also in honour of the eminent Ted Egan.
