Nominations are currently open for 2026 Australia Day awards. Forms are available
from the Council office and online at www.gisc.gov.au so grab a copy and nominate
a special person, group, or event that has contributed an outstanding voluntary
service to our community.

On 26th January this year, we honoured 2025 Citizens of the Year Jenny and Robert
Thomas who “tirelessly give many hours of their time to organisations in and around
Glen Innes.”

Described as quiet achievers never wanting praise for their efforts, Jenny and Robert
have continued their contributions to  Karinya Homes Inc, the Bowls Club, our
cemetery committee, the History Museum, and working with the Australia Day
committee to find and honour the 2026 Citizen of the year. They represent the
many wonderful volunteers in our community, bring enthusiasm and passion to their
various roles and go about their volunteering with enthusiasm….without expecting
any accolades.

Jenny and Robert believe the best part of becoming Citizens of the Year has been
the opportunity to highlight the benefits of volunteering for both the volunteer and
those it helps.  “Our community is strong, that is evident through the depths of
nominations this year with volunteers across social care and well-being, the arts,
emergency services and sport.  We hope this recognition encourages others to get
involved because there really is something for everyone, ” say Jenny and Robert.
