Prime Minister Albanese, Senator Tim Ayres, President Donald Trump and Madeleine King

Most people are well aware of Prime Minister Albanese’s recent long awaited meeting with President Trump in the White House. However, they might not be aware that apart from the Prime Minister and  Ambassador Kevin Rudd, the only cabinet ministers present were Madeleine King, Minister for Resources and former Glen Innes resident and High School student, Senator Tim Ayres, Minister for Industry and Innovation and Minister for Science.

Holding two cabinet portfolios, Tim Ayres is regarded as one of the Government’s most capable ministers and is a close political ally of the Prime Minister. Tim Ayres was seated next to Kevin Rudd throughout the meeting which must have been interesting when President Trump, apparently unaware that Rudd was present, made some off hand comments about him. The PM pointed him out as “the man sitting next to the tall man with a beard.”

Apart from Colonel P P Abbott who was elected to the first Senate in 1901, most if not all our parliamentary representatives have been based in other towns.

Although Tim  Ayres now lives in Sydney, he completed his secondary education at Glen Innes High School and was the boy School Captain in 1991. His younger brother and two sisters also attended the school. Many locals would remember Tim’s father Dr John Ayres as scientist at the local Agricultural Research Station and his mother Roberta held a senior statewide administrative position in the Dept of Education.

Tim Ayres retains a keen interest in Glen Innes and has several contemporaries here with whom he maintains contact. He joined the Glen Innes branch of the ALP when he was 16. In 2024 he was Guest of Honour at the local High School Speech Day. In addition to his cabinet responsibilities and the positions he holds on various parliamentary committees, Tim Ayres continues his links to Glen Innes as “duty senator” for New England.
