Quiz Night to Support Cancer Charities in Glen Innes

A community quiz night will be held on Saturday, May 31st at the Glen Innes Services Club to raise funds for two organisations supporting cancer patients: Can Assist Glen Innes and Bravery Box at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:00 p.m., will include trivia rounds, an auction, and a guest speaker. Tickets are $10 per person, with tables of 10 available. Bookings can be made through the Glen Innes Services Club reception.

The idea for the fundraiser came from two local residents motivated by personal experiences with cancer. The goal is to support local and regional initiatives that assist individuals and families affected by cancer.

Local and Regional Support

Can Assist Glen Innes is a branch of the Cancer Assistance Network that offers practical support to local residents undergoing cancer treatment. Because Glen Innes is a rural town in the Northern Tablelands, many patients need to travel long distances to access care in cities such as Armidale, Tamworth, Newcastle, or Sydney. Can Assist provides financial assistance for costs such as fuel, accommodation, and medication.

Bravery Box is a charity based at the Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. It provides small rewards and activities for children receiving cancer treatment, with the aim of improving their experience and offering a sense of motivation during difficult medical procedures. The program is tailored to individual interests, helping young patients stay engaged and supported.

Personal Story Behind the Event

The organisers were inspired to host the event after a family member, 16-year-old Kiani, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2022. She and her family spent nearly a year in Brisbane for treatment. During that time, they received support from both Can Assist and Bravery Box.

Kiani’s treatment included chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and she accessed Bravery Box regularly as part of her routine care. She had a particular interest in art, and the items she received were chosen to reflect that. After a period of remission, the cancer returned in 2023. The family relocated to Glen Innes in early 2024, and Kiani passed away in July of that year.

The Trivia Night is being held in her memory and to raise funds for the two organisations that played a role in her care.

All proceeds from the event will be evenly distributed between Can Assist Glen Innes and Bravery Box. Community members are encouraged to attend or contribute in support of cancer patients and their families.
