Wanting to get fit? Needing to get fit? Advised to get fit? Where do you start? There’s always the gym, but some people don’t feel comfortable in a gym and some people can’t afford to pay the fees.
Luckily, Glen Innes has a couple of free options for getting fit. Every Saturday at 8am up at the Standing Stones, Parkrun enthusiasts run a 5k track entirely on trail paths. This course is the highest elevation course in Australia at between 1200-1160m above sea level and the views are spectacular. Every week, this fun free event is organised and monitored by a band of volunteers. All parkrun events use Age Grading to help Parkrunners compare results and motivate them to extend themselves. Parkrunners enjoy a post run coffee at local coffee shops, so affiliation needs are also met.
The other option is the fun free fitness classes held at King Edward Park, West Avenue. These classes are sponsored by the Glen Innes Severn Council in collaboration with the Hunter New England Primary Health Network and offer to build better physical and mental health in a connected community. There’s a choice of X training or Pilates and the classes are held Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Classes run for 45 minutes. For more information and to register go to www.livelifeactive.com
If you think your fitness goals would be more easily fulfilled by maintaining motivation in the company of others, perhaps one of these options will be for you. You have nothing to lose.
