Community Christmas Cheer This Year

Another year has flown by in a flurry and Christmas cheer is almost here.  We’d like to bring to your attention some Christmas meal deals and celebrations, especially for those who might be lonely, isolated or just wanting to tap into their local community.

Deepwater Public School P& C is holding a most magical community event, Carols by Candlelight, that offers, amongst other things, a free sausage sizzle.  It will be held on Saturday 7th of December on the public school oval from 5.30pm.  Aside from the sausage sizzle, there will be markets, hot food, live music and a Santa visit.

On Sunday, December 8th, from 3.30pm the Salvation Army are hosting a free meal and celebration at their Glen Innes headquarters, corner of East Avenue and Bourke Street.  Sharilyn Bush, who along with her husband is leader of the Salvation Army in the area (taking in Armidale, Glen Innes and Tenterfield) says that this is the first year they have hosted such an event.  They are hoping not only to feed people, but also to spread the spirit of joy and Christmas.  They encourage anyone and everyone to come along.  However, for catering purposes, they need you to RSVP on 0438 462 274.

On Christmas Day itself, a volunteer group lead by Astrid Scheer and her family, hold a free Christmas meal at the Town Hall.  The days starts from 11.30 and food, presents and good cheer are in abundance.  They feed, on average, 150 people every year, but cater for more just in case.  No RSVP is needed.  The event started twelve years ago in the Girl Guide hut on East Avenue, but when it outgrew these premises, has been held at the Town Hall for the last nine years.  They are funded entirely by donations.  Astrid says that they couldn’t have continued for as long as they have without the incredible generosity of the residents of Glen Innes.  They also run entirely on volunteer labour.  If you happen to have a spare moment on Christmas Eve, when most of the setting up is done, you would be more than welcome.  Pop down and pitch in.  On Christmas Day itself, they have been well supported by volunteers, including the Danthonia community, who have spent many years volunteering their time and energy to support the event.  This event won the 2024 Australia Day award for community event of the year.

There are other events being held in villages and hamlets around Glen Innes.  So keep your ears and eyes out.  Support the incredible efforts of the volunteers who keep these events running.

And Merry Christmas to all.
