The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is inviting community feedback on a proposal by Glen Innes Severn Council to officially name a local landmark in Glen Innes as The Australian Standing Stones.
Located within the Centennial Parklands and accessed from Watsons Drive, the landmark serves as a tribute to Celtic heritage in Australia. It acknowledges the contributions of Celtic people to the nation’s development, particularly in the Glen Innes region.
The Australian Standing Stones were established to commemorate this history, providing a venue for cultural celebration and education. The site hosts the annual Australian Celtic Festival, which attracts visitors from across the country.
Having the name of the Australian Standing Stones officially recognised by the GNB will ensure that the landmark is accurately named as such on maps and in various databases.
NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood highlighted the significance of place names in preserving community heritage, stating, “Names are not just labels; they tell the stories of their community, and it is important that they reflect the character and history of the local area.”
The GNB is seeking feedback to assess community sentiment regarding the proposed name. However, alternative name suggestions are not being considered at this time.
Details of the proposal and submission instructions are available on the Geographical Names Board’s website. Written submissions can also be sent to the Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The deadline for submissions is 14 March 2025.
