The Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) has introduced an Australian first in rural digital health with the launch of the Gen 2 SiSU Mini Health Station at Timbs Pharmacy, Glen Innes. This innovative health station aims to enhance access to preventive health services and address long-standing health disparities in rural areas.
Rural Australians, including those in Glen Innes and the broader New England region, face distinct health challenges, such as lower life expectancy, higher rates of chronic illnesses, and limited access to healthcare services compared to urban populations. Health outcomes in New England consistently lag behind state and national averages, underscoring the need for targeted solutions.
“Our long-standing commitment to Glen Innes, a community that has historically faced healthcare limitations, drives this project forward,” said HNECC PHN Chief Executive Officer Richard Nankervis. “By introducing this innovative digital health solution, we are actively addressing the health disparities faced by rural communities.”
The Role of Timbs Pharmacy in Health Innovation
Timbs Pharmacy, a respected local institution, has partnered with HNECC PHN to bring this digital health technology to the community. The pharmacy will house the SiSU Mini Health Station, giving residents an easy, accessible way to check their health.
The SiSU Mini Health Station offers three significant benefits for the Glen Innes community:
1. Improved Access to Preventive Health: The station provides a free, quick way for residents to monitor their health. In just four minutes, users can measure vital health indicators like weight, body composition, blood pressure, and heart rate, allowing them to keep an eye on their health in between doctor’s visits.
2. Early Detection and Intervention: On-demand health screenings enable early detection of potential health issues, encouraging residents to seek timely medical advice and intervention. Early action on health risks can make a substantial difference to long-term outcomes.
3. Increased Health Literacy: The SiSU Mini Health Station aims to raise health awareness in the community. Using the SiSU Health mobile app, residents can view personalised health reports, track their health, and engage in proactive wellness management.
The station will suggest that individuals with elevated readings consult a GP or pharmacist for further assessment. Healthcare providers can then develop personalised health plans, which may include lifestyle adjustments, exercise, or medication, to address issues such as cardiovascular risk.
Boosting Health in Rural Communities
The installation of the SiSU Mini Health Station is part of HNECC PHN’s broader “Better Health for the Bush” initiative, which seeks to improve healthcare access for rural Australians. By partnering with a trusted local pharmacy, HNECC PHN is giving Glen Innes residents greater control over their health with the help of advanced digital tools.
