Girls in Trade Excursion to Inverell- GIHS

Tim at Boss Engineering showed us how the pressing machine can bend to a single degree of accuracy

On Monday 2nd December, 19 female year 8 and 9 students embarked on a day trip to Inverell to investigate trade jobs for women.

We were warmly welcomed by 4 different businesses: Boss Engineering, Bindaree Beef, High Style Furniture and Sapphire Nutrition.

The tours through the businesses were amazing and the girls were able to meet female workers and ask questions.  The team leaders and managers in all businesses were extremely encouraging of the girls working in trades and talked about not being able to hire enough females in their businesses.

A big “thank you” should go to Mrs Ginny Fenwicke from the Educational Pathways Program who funded the excursion.

It was a wonderful opportunity for the girls to see industry but to also have time to talk to young ladies currently working in that industry.

The process of work exploration is crucial for teenagers because it helps them make informed decision about their future professional paths, it also increases their career self-efficacy and promotes career maturity.

Student Report

On the 2nd of December we went to Inverell to four different places which were Boss Engineering, Bindaree Beef, High Styles, and Sapphire Nutrition. They were all amazing to have a look at with all the different jobs that are needed to be done to produce the finished product.

The standout company for me was Bindaree Beef showing us all the different trades that are available and giving us a tour around inside the factory where they cut and package the meat to then sell to their customers. But overall, it was a fun day showing all the different jobs that are available in many different industries.

Student Report

On Monday Mrs Wright and Mrs Woods took us to different businesses in Inverell. We first went to Boss Engineering and had a tour, led by female staff, learning how everything worked there.

Then we went to Bindaree Beef where we learnt about the maintenance jobs there such as Electrician and Fitter. We went for a show-around the meat processing room then had lunch.

Next, we stopped at High Style Furniture and were shown the steps on how everything is made there.

Finally on our way out of town we visited Sapphire Nutrition, the dog and cat food factory, learning how everything was made, packed and shipped.

At all the places we visited, we learnt what jobs, work experience and apprenticeships were available for women and the training required.
