Blood Is Thicker Than Water: The Chisholm Letters

The Scots have always been clannish, and blood being thicker than water, there’s often a tale to tell.  Such is the case with Kim Polley’s 2023 self-published book: “The Chisholm Letters – The Story Of A Town Scavenger”.

Kim has captured the story of her third great-grandfather, Colin Chisholm. Colin was born in Dingwall, and moved to Nairn (near Inverness), where he became the town scavenger, a job which included cleaning up the middens, lighting the lamps and street sweeping. He was also involved in efforts to improve the sanitation in Nairn.  After extensive research, Kim has followed the life of Colin, his siblings, and their descendants.

One thing of note to our local area is that Colin’s sister, Christian, (Christian was amongst the first people buried in the Glen Innes cemetery after her death in 1860) married Andrew Ross and they emigrated to Australia.  They left from Cromarty in 1838 on an unseaworthy ship that required extensive repairs in Devonport before continuing on to Australia.  One of their sons, Colin Ross, and his wife, Rosanna, were instrumental in the establishment of Inverell.  Although Alexander Campbell established Inverell Station in 1835, it was Colin and Rosanna who opened a store for settlers in 1853.

Kim states that her work is a work of social history.  Up until 1868, her book is based on authenticated letters and her broad research.  After that date, she has painted her story in a series of notes.  Her story is fascinating and gives some insight into the Celtic settlement in this area.

As you would imagine, in following such a broad sweep of family and history, there are some things that stand out.  One is a longstanding commitment to social justice, and a strong entrepreneurial streak.  There are also some genetic issues that have passed between the generations.  As in any good family history, there have also been a few scandals!
