Water NSW has issued a red alert warning for blue-green algae in Beardy Waters and Beardy Waters Weir. This naturally occurring seasonal issue affects untreated water and has implications for recreational use and livestock.
The red alert warning advises against consuming untreated water from the affected areas, as boiling does not remove algae toxins. Recreational activities such as swimming, canoeing, and fishing should also be avoided until the alert is lifted. Council and Water NSW are actively monitoring the situation and working to address the issue.
Glen Innes Severn Council has reassured the community that treated water from the Beardy Waters Treatment Plant remains safe for consumption. This notification applies strictly to untreated water. Livestock managers and pet owners are urged to prevent animals from drinking from the affected sections of Beardy Waters.
The red alert will stay in place until ongoing monitoring confirms the risk has diminished. Anyone who believes they have been affected by blue-green algae exposure is advised to seek medical attention.
