Kolby Martin, a rugby league player who started playing with the Glen Innes Magpies when he was five years old, and who is now under contract with the Manly Sea Eagles, has just been named as the winner of a major NRL Wellbeing award.

Kolby is the son of Marissa and Simon Martin who live on the family property about 40km out of Glen Innes on the Pinkett Road, and the grandson of his proud number one fan Gail McIntyre.

As an SG Ball squad/team member, every Thursday Kolby attends wellbeing sessions under the direction of Wellbeing Director Steven Tevita and was named the winner of the major award which was presented to the player who consistently demonstrated leadership, respect, and a commitment to personal growth, both on and off the field.

When presenting the award, Steven said; “This year we implemented the ‘Be Real’ wellbeing program in SG Ball and Harold Matthews Shield.

“Kolby always applied himself to the homework given to him in this program and he always had the right answers in our wellbeing sessions.”

Kolby unfortunately couldn’t be at the presentation because he had just had surgery to rectify an injury and had come back home to recuperate.

Commenting on the importance Kolby’s assets of dedication and mindset, Steven said that it was this that set Kolby apart from teammates in forging a career in Rugby League.

“Kolby is currently studying at the ISCA (International Sports College of Australia) and he understands that Rugby League isn’t forever.

“It’s very important for him to have a plan A1 and I know Kolby will flourish in whatever he decides to do.”

He is studying for his diploma of Sports Management and High Performance and recently took part in a photo shoot for ISCA brochures and advertisements.

Kolby has been playing on the wing and in the centres and is concentrating on building up his speed, his reaction times plus general strength and conditioning.
