The Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library has introduced a new initiative designed to support members of the community who experience difficulties with everyday literacy tasks. The program, titled Living Life Literacy, is now available to the public and aims to provide practical assistance to anyone needing help with reading and writing in daily life.
The program has been developed to support individuals who may find tasks such as reading recipes, navigating special dietary shopping, filling out forms, or even reading for pleasure a challenge. Whether someone is looking to understand a medical form, follow cooking instructions, or simply enjoy a novel, the Living Life Literacy program seeks to offer a helping hand.
Volunteer tutors are available through the library to work with participants. These dedicated volunteers can provide assistance tailored to the needs of each individual, offering support in a respectful and confidential setting.
“A meeting will be organised with a member of staff, and they will then match the client with a tutor suitable for their needs,” a library spokesperson said. “This help can be a one-off, or regular learn-to-read lessons.”
Importantly, the program is open to people of all ages and backgrounds. It is not limited to formal education but instead focuses on the practical and personal aspects of literacy that can make a significant difference in day-to-day life.
Whether it’s helping an adult gain the confidence to read a bus timetable or assisting someone to complete important paperwork, the goal is to empower participants and make daily tasks more manageable.
The Glen Innes Severn Public & TAFE Library encourages anyone who may benefit from the program, or who knows someone who might, to reach out.
