New residents were treated to a warm and lively introduction to Glen Innes at the recent Welcome to Glen Innes Pizza Night, held on Saturday 19 July at the Great Central Hotel.
Organised by Local Connect as part of The Welcome Experience — a NSW Government–funded program aimed at supporting the settlement and retention of essential workers in regional communities — the evening brought together around 30 guests in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Led locally by Glen Innes Community Connector Pagan Kelly, the event provided an opportunity for essential workers who are new to the area to meet one another, make connections with locals, and feel a sense of belonging.
“It was just a really lovely night,” said Ms Kelly. “You could see people relaxing, chatting, and finding common ground over a slice of pizza. There was a real buzz in the room — lots of laughter, easy conversation, networking, and new friendships forming. There was even a bit of dancing! That’s exactly what these nights are about: making people feel at home in Glen Innes. Making sure our new community members feel genuinely valued, welcome, and part of the town.”
The casual setting, complete with live music and a crackling fire, helped set the tone for the evening. Complimentary pizzas were shared at communal tables, helping to spark conversation and connection.
Each eligible attendee also received a Welcome Experience pack, filled with program merchandise and useful local information.
Guests described the event as “the perfect way to break the ice” and “a wonderfully informal welcome to Glen Innes.”
Executive Manager of Local Connect, Margot Davis, said events like this are a vital part of the program’s success. “It’s not just about relocating people — it’s about helping them feel part of the place. That’s what makes them want to stay.”
Local Connect acknowledged and thanked Glen Innes Severn Council Acting Mayor Carol Sparks and General Manager Bernard Smith for attending and helping to make the evening a success.
As Glen Innes continues to welcome new essential workers, community-led events such as these highlight the importance of hospitality and genuine connection in building a strong and inclusive regional town.
