Jenny and Robert Thomas were named 2025 Citizens of the Year for their tireless volunteer work. Known as quiet achievers, the couple contributes to a range of local organisations, including Karinya Homes Inc, the Bowls Club, the cemetery committee, the History House Museum, and the Australia Day Committee. “Our community is strong, evident through the depth of nominations this year,” they said. “We hope this recognition encourages others to get involved because there really is something for everyone.”

Young Citizen of the Year Darcy Husband also received acclaim for his extensive engagement in community and school life. Darcy participates in numerous sports teams, dances with the Glen Innes High School dance team, and volunteers at the Chapel Theatre, assisting with ticketing, serving, and cleaning. He has also been involved in educational initiatives such as the Premier’s Reading Challenge and university competitions, demonstrating leadership and commitment at every turn.

The 2025 Emergency Services Volunteer of the Year, Lachlan Johnstone, was recognised for nearly 36 years of dedicated service in both the Australian Defence Force and the Rural Fire Service. Lachlan emphasised the selflessness of volunteers, saying, “These men and women step out the door knowing they may not be coming back… this quiet acceptance to go and protect people and property truly requires the utmost respect.”

Community groups were also celebrated. The Glen Innes Arts Council won Community Event of the Year for its “Golden Age of Broadway” show, praised for its volunteer-driven production and the joy it brought to audiences. The Glen Innes Natural Resources Advisory Committee (GLENRAC), marking 36 years of service, was recognised for its ongoing environmental work and community programs.
