A recent multi-agency compliance operation targeting illicit tobacco and vaping products across the New England region has delivered significant results, with an estimated $84,000 worth of illegal goods seized and several retail premises temporarily shut down.
Between Wednesday 15 April and Thursday 16 April 2026, officers from New England Police District and NSW Health Tobacco Regulation and Enforcement carried out a coordinated operation focusing on non-licensed tobacconists. The action followed sustained community concern, formal complaints, and ongoing advocacy highlighting the growing presence of illegal tobacco and vaping products in the region.
Three premises across Armidale and Glen Innes were issued three-month closure notices under the Public Health (Tobacco) Act 2008. Authorities also seized substantial quantities of tobacco and vaping products, along with cash suspected to be proceeds of crime.
The operation underscores the increasing focus on enforcement and interagency cooperation to address what has become a persistent issue affecting regional communities.
Glen Innes Severn Council has been actively raising concerns about the proliferation of illicit tobacco and unregulated vaping products, citing risks to public health, impacts on legitimate local businesses, and links to broader criminal activity. Council advocacy has included formal reports, submissions, and correspondence to government calling for stronger regulation, improved enforcement capacity, and better coordination between agencies.
Importantly, recognition has been given to former Councillor Arandale, who first brought the issue to the attention of Council. Council’s early advocacy helped initiate the local response and ensured the matter gained the attention it warranted.
Council has also contributed to state-level discussions, with its General Manager recently appearing at a parliamentary inquiry examining illegal tobacco and related matters. This participation reflects a broader commitment to ensuring regional perspectives are represented in policy development and reform.
The recent enforcement action sends a clear signal that authorities are taking the issue seriously, while also reinforcing the value of community reporting and vigilance.
In a Press Release, Council has indicated it will continue to work closely with state agencies and maintain its advocacy for stronger protections to safeguard community health, support lawful businesses, and to address illegal activity across the region.
