Glen Innes Severn Council has taken a significant step toward shaping the region’s long-term future, endorsing the draft Glen Innes Highlands Precincts and Activation Framework for public exhibition.
At its Ordinary Meeting on 23 April 2026, Council resolved to place the draft Framework on exhibition by the end of May, following amendments made during the meeting. Community feedback will be sought before a final version is considered in July.
The Framework represents the first coordinated, evidence-based approach to precinct planning and activation across the entire Local Government Area. It establishes a clear structure recognising the unique role and character of different precincts, from town centres and civic spaces to villages, landscapes and key destinations.
Designed to guide how communities function and connect, the Framework focuses on supporting community life, strengthening local business, attracting visitors and fostering a sense of place. It also provides a shared direction for how these areas can evolve over time.
Importantly, the document outlines a long-term approach to future planning. It will inform precinct masterplans, support investment decisions and improve Council’s readiness for grant funding by ensuring projects are staged, coordinated and aligned with broader strategic priorities.
The exhibition period will provide an opportunity for residents to help shape the final outcome. Community consultation is expected to begin in Deepwater in June before extending across the Local Government Area, with local knowledge seen as essential to refining the Framework and ensuring it reflects each precinct’s history, role and potential.
Once feedback is received and considered, Council is expected to adopt the final Precincts and Activation Framework in July 2026.
The initiative is intended to position Glen Innes Severn for thoughtful, place-based growth over the coming decades, supporting liveability, resilience and long-term prosperity across the region.
