Community Feedback Shapes Final ANZAC Nature Play Park Designs

anzac park final design

Plans for a major upgrade of the ANZAC Park playground are moving ahead, with the project set to transform the existing play area into a nature-themed, inclusive, and engaging space for children of all ages.

Consultation on the ANZAC Nature Play Park has now concluded, with Glen Innes Severn Council thanking residents for their input into the project.

From 17 June to 9 July 2025, Council received 20 submissions on the proposed designs. The feedback has been reviewed, leading to some adjustments before construction begins. The existing playground will need to be temporarily closed during the build, with Council to notify the community once the construction schedule is confirmed.

Key Themes from Community Feedback

  • Playground equipment: Suggestions included trampolines, sand play, roller slides, and easier access to slides for younger children. Council has confirmed an in-ground trampoline will be added, replacing the water play feature that was included in the original design. A turf mound slide and solid ramp will also improve accessibility for younger children. Sand play and roller slides were ruled out due to safety, hygiene, and maintenance concerns.
  • Safety and fencing: Council has opted for a hedge fence with gates. The dense planting of the hedge is intended to provide safety while complementing the natural look of the park and allowing CCTV visibility.
  • Vandalism concerns: CCTV cameras are already in place, with capacity to add more if required.
  • Amenities: Calls for upgraded toilets were acknowledged. While not part of this stage, Council will seek future funding for improvements.
  • Teen hangout space: Although outside the current project’s scope, Council noted community support for youth-oriented areas and will consider opportunities in future projects.
  • Trees and shade: Existing trees will remain, with new trees added and mulched for protection. Families will still be able to sit under shaded areas for picnics.
  • Pathways and safety: Concerns about rocks near paths have been addressed, with Council confirming the design will not include intentional trip hazards. Natural elements will be positioned to encourage safe play and exploration.

Funding and Investment

In the submissions received during the consultation period, a concern was expressed about Council committing a $100,000 contribution to the project given the present financial climate.  Council advises that its $100,000 co-contribution to the Stronger Country Communities Fund grant helped secure state funding for the playground and strengthened the case for additional federal funding through the Growing Regions Program.

Next Steps

There is no project timeline as yet, but Council advises that with designs now finalised, construction of the ANZAC Nature Play Park will soon get underway. Updates about the construction will be posted on the Glen Innes Severn Council ‘Have Your Say’ project page.
