Attempts are being made to revive a Saturday or Sunday cricket competition in Glen Innes.
A sport which was extremely strong in the town in the past, has fallen by the wayside in recent times.
Where Glen Innes once had a number of club, pub and business teams competing, including a team from the Correctional Centre, and where Glen Innes once had players who starred in district and regional teams, organisers are struggling to have their mid-week 20/20 competition attract more than four teams.
This Friday evening at 5pm a competition comprises one side made up mainly of members from the premiership-winning U18 rugby league team, a rugby (union) team representing the Elks, a side from the Club Hotel and another, as yet un-named team, from one of the service stations.
The 20/20 competition is scheduled to run over November and December but organisers are considering establishing a mid-week competition in the new year in an attempt to attract more players.
A spokesperson for the cricketers, Tom Benton, told Glen Innes News that there hasn’t been a Saturday competition here since 2018-2019.
He said the town was fortunate to have King George Oval which is a picturesque cricket ground with a good synthetic wicket, a grandstand and all facilities.
Mr Benton said it would be a pity to see the town’s cricketing heritage fade into oblivion.
Starting this week, it is hoped to have two games played each Friday evening, the second game to be played on Lynch Oval.
Players interested in either the Friday 20/20 competition, a mid-week comp, or a new weekend competition, can contact Tom Benton on 0487 203 460.
