In last Fridays cricket match at King George Oval the Club Hotel Colts took on the RSL and, with the days lengthening and good clear conditions, a full 20-20 was played in a match which would go down to the wire, needing every ball to be bowled to determine the winner.
RSL won the toss, chose to bat, and found themselves 1 down in short order as Lucas Tait (6) was caught off Angus Lane in the second over. From there, though, RSL had steady contributions right down the order from Kayne Campbell (22), Mitch Duddy (47), Ryan Macintyre (24), Kahn Johnson (18) and Hamish Mcleod (11) all adding meaningfully to the total.
There was a late flurry of wickets at the end for not many runs but in the end the RSL had compiled a handy 144 off their 20 overs.
Tom Chard was on the receiving end of some big hitting but also grabbed a couple of wickets taking 2-27 off 3 overs and Dylan Ferris took 1-14 off his 4 tight overs.
In return Colts were in all sorts of trouble, falling to 2-3 in the second over. From here though Aaron Sherrit (44) and Dean Swaffer (13) got things back on track for the colts, and took the score line along to 27 in the fourth over before Dean was dismissed by Hamish Mcleod. Another quick wicket fell and the Colts where on the verge of collapse when Dylan Ferris (49) joined Sherrit.
The pair batted together for 10 overs, putting on a run a ball 61 run partnership. When a wicket finally fell it was Sherrit who was removed to an outstanding catch by Glen Innes’ answer to Jasprit Bumrah, Basil.
At this point Colts needed a further 45 off the final 42 balls. Ferris continued to score runs despite being dropped about 5 times and miss hitting every second delivery, and, by the time he was dismissed, Colts had moved to 129 with 4 overs to go, requiring 15 runs off 24 balls.
Kayne Campbell bowled exceptionally well in the 17th and 19th overs and Kahn Johnson in the 18th, restricting the colts to only 9 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in their combined 3 overs, setting the final over up with colts needing 6 runs off 6 balls.
Ryan Macintyre was called on to have his first bowl of the match for the final over and showed good nerves and resolve under pressure, bowling 4 dots off the first four balls. A wide then gave the colts batters a slight sniff but a single off the next ball left colts needing 4 off the final delivery.
With the field spread the most they could manage was to scamper through for 2 to leave them on 143, 1 run behind the RSL score.
This week will see the Elks take on Colts on Friday at King George oval with play starting at 5:00. Anyone wanting a hit, feel free to come down!
