The Glen Innes Severn Council has announced plans to host a roundtable meeting to discuss strategies for improving public safety. The meeting will bring together key stakeholders, including the Glen Innes Business Chamber, sponsors of a recent petition from the business community, and local police representatives.
Mayor Cr Margot Davis highlighted the collaborative nature of the meeting, saying, “The meeting will provide an opportunity for these stakeholders to collaboratively identify practical measures to ensure public safety and address the impacts of unacceptable behaviour on local businesses and residents.”
Cr Davis also emphasised the relatively low crime levels in the region but reiterated the importance of vigilance. “We are fortunate that the levels of crime in our community are much less than other regional locations; however, we want to ensure that continues, and we wish to work with the community to make our region even safer,” she said.
At its recent Ordinary Meeting, Council formally acknowledged concerns raised by the community regarding crime and reaffirmed its commitment to public safety.
In response to a petition from the business community requesting the installation of street surveillance cameras, Council has committed to:
- Pursuing external funding opportunities to expand CCTV coverage, complementing existing budget allocations.
- Collaborating with property owners to encourage private surveillance initiatives.
- Developing a comprehensive Public Safety and Asset Protection CCTV Strategy.
Further details about the meeting are expected to be released soon.
