Emmaville Mining Museum Hours Change, A Callout For Volunteers

The Emmaville Mining Museum is a true gem (if you’ll pardon the pun) of the tourist experiences that are offered in the Glen Innes area.

The dream of the late Mr and Mrs Jack Curnow, who bequeathed a vast mineral collection to the Emmaville community, was the hope of opening a museum in the town. These days the museum is also home to the Jillet, Gilbey, Ellis, Schumacher, Trethewey, Hermann and Maskey collections. In all, there are over 4,000 mineral and gem specimens as well as a General Store museum, a replica blacksmith’s shop, and an old wood-fired bakery.

The Council purchased the old Foley’s Store in Moore Street many years ago and the store was refurbished and turned into a folk museum entirely by a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers. The Emmaville Mining Museum Committee is a Community Committee of Council, exercising its functions under s.355.

Over the  last 25 years, the museum’s volunteers have poured their expertise and love into creating captivating displays which can be viewed with a gold coin donation.

Evan Brown, President of the Committee said “that sadly, with a decrease in the number of volunteers available to open the museum, trading days are now restricted”.  The Museum’s new hours are open Monday, Tuesday and Friday from 10 am to 2 pm, Wednesday and Thursday closed, and Saturday and Sunday open from 10 am to 4pm.

If you are interested in volunteering and are  passionate about minerals and geology, history, military displays, or machinery, the Emmaville Mining Museum Committee would love to talk to you!
