Glen Innes Highlands Lioness Lions Club again hosted the Youth of the Year Public Speaking Competition. Students from Glen Innes High School submitted applications, similar in nature to applying for a job, and were then selected to proceed onto the Glen Innes final.
A panel of judges conducted a 40 minute interview where the student’s general knowledge was tested by responding to matters associated with inspiring and empowering young people, addressing challenges such as youth crime and disengagement and adapting to create new opportunities for young people.
Later in the day students competed in the public speaking component in front of an audience where they had to answer two impromptu questions and present a five minute speech on a topic of their own choosing. Topics for the speeches included Shayna Jack’s comeback, Parkrun and The Importance of Passion and Resilience.
I would like to congratulate Dakota Kerr, Phoebe Vimpany and Rory Husband for taking part in Youth of the Year and give an extra big congratulations to Rory for winning both the public speaking and being the overall winner.
Thanks also to Glen Innes High School for supporting the competition and the judges, Rob Banham, Jenny Sloman, Belinda Stanton and reserve judge Robyn Cartwright for giving their time to be part of this worthwhile project.
