Community Profile – Glen Innes Speakers

Do you hate public speaking? Well you are not alone! For some people the fear of public speaking is said to be worse than the fear of death. And if this is the year that you are to be promoted, or appointed to a leadership role in a community organisation, or even worse… you have been asked to emcee your brother’s wedding, then the universe is actually telling you to get ready to speak in public. Maybe it’s time to think about joining the Glen Innes Speakers.

Glen Innes Speakers provides education and guidance to members to build their public speaking skills. At each meeting members and visitors give short impromptu presentations to the group. A presentation could be a prepared speech, reciting a poem, telling a joke, or practising a training presentation. Members then provide encouraging feedback.

Cheryl Rudd, President of Glen Innes Speakers, says that quite a few members join after one of these significant life events that require them to speak in front of a group of people.

People who have been working on their family history or memoirs also come along, to share their stories in public and use the meetings as a sounding board. They say that speaking to an audience helps them get their thoughts on paper.

Cheryl’s own reason for joining was different again. She came to her first meeting simply to meet new friends and because she loves listening to people’s stories. Cheryl says that listening to other speakers also helps you to listen better, to ‘turn your ears on’, as she puts it.

Sometimes an older schoolchild might attend a meeting with a parent (who needs to be a member of the Glen Innes Bowling Club) when the young person is preparing for a leadership role or a public speaking competition.

Glen Innes Speakers meet twice a month at the Glen Innes Bowling Club on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:00 pm.

Annual membership of Glen Innes Speakers is $5.00. (Please note that you will also need to be a member of the Bowling Club)
