This year, local law firm APJ Law celebrates a significant milestone—150 years of providing legal services to the New England region. To honour the occasion, the team has delved into the firm’s rich history, uncovering documents and recollections that trace its evolution over the past century and a half. The firm’s journey is one of growth, adaptation, and commitment to serving its local communities.
A Legacy of Legal Service

The firm was originally founded in Glen Innes in 1875 by TJ Kearney from Inverell. Over the years, it underwent several changes, both in name and leadership. In 1894, Norman MacDonald was acquired by Colonel PP Abbott, leading to the establishment of DW Abbott & Co, a name that remained for over 75 years.
In the early 1970s, the firm transitioned to Abbott & Co. Further transformations followed, with Peter Pardy joining in 1979, prompting a rebrand to Abbott Pardy & Co. In 1982, with the addition of Mac Jenkins, the firm became Abbott Pardy & Jenkins. These changes reflected the contributions of key legal professionals whose expertise helped shape the firm’s growth and its standing in the region.
Expansion and Growth
As demand for legal services grew, the firm expanded beyond its original Glen Innes office. In 1999, APJ Law opened an office in Inverell, taking over KA Brown & Associates. This expansion allowed the firm to reach more clients and further cement its reputation in the legal landscape of the New England region.
In December 2000, the firm incorporated Tilbury & Co, leading to the relocation of the Armidale office to larger premises in Faulkner Street. This move was a significant step in accommodating the firm’s growing team and increasing its capacity to effectively serve the community. The firm continued to evolve, and in July 2008, it adopted its current name, APJ Law, reflecting the legacy of its long-serving partners while embracing a modern identity.
Continued Evolution and Leadership Changes
Change has remained a constant for the firm, with key developments occurring in the past two decades. In 2012, the firm sold its Inverell branch and relocated the Armidale office to Hanna’s Arcade.
Long-serving members have played a significant role in shaping the firm. In 2021, Mac Jenkins stepped down as a partner after more than 40 years with the firm, continuing as a consultant until his retirement in 2024. Over the decades, Mac was instrumental in the firm’s operations and legal practice, earning the respect of colleagues and clients alike.
The firm also experienced a great loss in 2023 with the passing of Peter Pardy, who had been a key figure in the firm’s growth and success.
Looking to the Future
This month, APJ Law welcomes two new partners – Bruin Hutchings and Emalie Hurcum.
