The Second Time Round Saddlery at 17 Oliver Street, Glen Innes not only sells second hand saddles and equipment for horses, fishing lures, feed and so much more, but also provides a safe haven for those ex-navy and ex-army veterans in the Glen Innes area.
The saddlery, open since 2022, is run by Tegan Harwood and Tracey Waters. Tegan herself is a twelve year veteran of the navy. In those twelve years, she moved fourteen times, so she was glad to return to Glen Innes (where she had moved as a teenager) to settle down.
Tegan kept coming across ex-vets and the idea of providing an easy place to be and non-judgemental support evolved almost organically. Not only does she provide tables and chairs on the verandah of the saddlery, but there’s also a quiet room inside the saddlery if needed. She feels they could plan additional activities as more vets become aware of the support on offer.
Tracey is the secretary of the Show Society and is also involved in animal rescue. Because they have both come across older farmers at the saddlery, Tracey has been gathering material for a book of recipes and how-tos from a previous era.
These two powerhouses are involved in so much more. Last Anzac Day they made and sold special fishing lures, with the proceeds going to the local RSL sub-branch. For this Anzac Day, they’re holding a market on the 26th of April, with proceeds from the stalls also going to the local RSL sub-branch.
In addition, they are involved in a national hunting competition from 11th until 27th April. Although the nominations are already closed, the presentation will be held at Emmaville’s Club Hotel on 27th April. There are plans to make this an annual event.
At the heart of all their activities is a strong sense of community and connection. If you know anyone who might benefit from the activities at the saddlery, please let them know about it.
