A well-known Glen Innes landmark, known locally as “The Convent”, has been sold with an unconditional exchange of contracts.
Principal of the selling agency Raine & Horne Rural Glen Innes, Nellie Hayes, said the sale met expectations under good conditions. The property attracted strong interest during the campaign, with more than 220 enquiries and 17 offers received.
Although the final price has not been disclosed, the property was marketed with a price guide of $1.5 million.
The buyers are from outside the district and intend to proceed with the existing Development Approval (DA). The approval allows the convent site to be redeveloped into a function centre with boutique accommodation across 23 suites. Plans also include dining and reception areas, office spaces and parking facilities. The DA outlines potential for the venue to host weddings, conferences, cultural events and tourism-related activities.
Situated on Church Street and less than 400 metres from the Glen Innes town centre, the two-storey, triple-brick building is set on more than 8,000 square metres of land and is noted for its architectural features, including high ceilings, timber floors, stained-glass windows and heritage fireplaces.
The convent has a long history in Glen Innes. Built in 1884, it was established as St Joseph’s Convent School and run by the Sisters of St Joseph, who arrived from Adelaide under the guidance of Bishop Torreggiani. The site is historically significant as it stands on the land where Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint, signed the deeds for the original convent.
With redevelopment plans moving forward upon the completion of the sale, the property is expected to begin a new chapter while maintaining its place as a recognised landmark in Glen Innes.
