Paul Jopson loves his work. He keeps an immaculate green at the Glen Innes Bowling Club (Bowlo) and he enjoys introducing novices to the delights of bowling. But another of his superpowers is his own bowling ability.
Paul was one of the New South Wales team at the recent National Senior’s Championship held at the Devonport Country Club from the 14th – 18th of November organised by Bowls Australia. The team consisted of twelve players, three rinks of four. New South Wales won the championship; the first time since 2019. They defeated Victoria in a hard fought and very close final. Paul stated, ‘It was a big thrill to win, especially with such an exciting finish.’
The championship was played on a mixture of indoor and outdoor greens. Paul explained that the indoor green played on carpet was a quick green. However, the outdoor green was a slow one. It proved to be a lot harder to bowl on and to win a game required a lot more effort. On the outdoor green, they also contended with rain and cold westerly winds.
He described the first three games and the final one as the toughest in the competition. One hard won game was played against South Australia who were last year’s winners. In the end, New South Wales won six out of their seven games.
In this state or origin series, the blues were triumphant!
