The Show 100 years ago

The Show 100 years ago

From snippets sourced from the 1926 Glen Innes Examiner the Show was very different 100 years ago. ‘In Glen Innes shows have been held almost continuously since 1870, when in conjunction with Inverell the first carnival took place on the recreation ground at the back of the present Intermediate High School (now the Public School) -and the only shelter was that provided by tarpaulins. Shows were held alternately at Inverell and Glen Innes until 1877. Since then, the show society has acquired a ground of its own on which it has placed costly improvements while its operations have grown until…

Breast screen bus is in town

The BreastScreen NSW mobile clinic is currently stationed in the public car park behind Glen Innes Town Hall, Sommerlad Lane, and will remain there until Wednesday 25 February 2026, offering free breast screening to eligible women. Rebecca Delaporte, Manager of BreastScreen NSW Hunter New England, says regular screening is one of the most effective ways women can protect their health. Early detection of breast cancer significantly improves survival rates and can reduce the need for invasive treatments such as mastectomy or chemotherapy. Importantly, around 90 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer have no family history, underscoring the value…

Australia Day In Glen Innes Severn

Australia Day In Glen Innes Severn

Glen Innes Severn’s Australia Day celebrations began in true country style with a “breakfast of champions” at Red Range Hall, where the Red Range Hall Committee pulled off a near-miraculous loaves and fishes effort. Locals and visitors alike enjoyed barbecued sausage and egg, steak and onion sandwiches, with generously donated steak from Rangers Valley earning particular appreciation. Australia Day Ambassador Dr Clio Cresswell set the tone with a short but engaging address that proved even mathematics can entertain on a public holiday morning. Festivities then moved to the Glen Innes Services Club, where the Glen Innes Lady Lions served a…

Our Local History: School teachers Dot and Nan Mellings

Our Local History: School teachers Dot and Nan Mellings

Hard to do justice to these exceptional women in a short article. When information technology mainly consisted of chalk, blackboard, film strips and a radio, it was reported in 1968 … “Every teacher who came to Glen Innes from another centre said the local school was the best equipped in which they had worked.” Dot and Nan Mellings, the daughters of William & Edith Mellings were two of our local representative sports women and acclaimed school teachers working at that time. Living on an isolated farm at Pinkett they were originally home-schooled, but later able to attend the High School…

Large crowd gathers at Red Range Celebrating Australia Day

Red Range Hall was literally bursting at the seams with a terrific crowd of locals and visitors gathered for an 8am breakfast, the first celebration of Australia Day for 2026 in the Glen Innes Severn Local Government Area. The local Red Range Hall Committee had set up an impressive display of milk cans and cream separators as well as  some examples of the first teat cups as a nod to the importance of the dairying industry to Red Ranges early history.  However, it was the alluring smell of the BBQ that drew the locals indoors.  Rangers Valley had generously supplied…
