I attended the Changeover dinner of the local Lions club and was amazed at how much money they have raised in the past year. Also, how many of our local organisations benefitted from the fund-raising effort of the club. Glen Innes Can Assist, Glen Innes Industries, Glen Innes High School, Karinya Homes, Anglican Food Hub, and Local Connect, just to name a few. First Vice District Governor of Lions, Joe Pope, and the Zone Chairperson David Doek were special guests. The annual Celtic Festival, which draws a myriad of visitors to our town, is also the major fundraiser for the Glen Innes LIONS. The Glen Innes LIONS club have been part of the Glen Innes community since 1953. Funds raised by the Lions are distributed back into the community annually in time for close of financial year in June and on an ad-hoc basis. Molly Chard: Lions Youth of the Year Zone Finalist

Glen Innes student Molly Chard has been named the winner of the Zone Final of the Lions Youth of the Year competition, held in Glen Innes on Sunday, 15 March. Molly, who is the 2026 Head Prefect at PLC Armidale, impressed judges across a demanding day of competition that tested leadership, communication skills and community awareness. The competition involved a particularly challenging series of back-to-back assessments. Molly first undertook a 40-minute panel interview, where students were questioned on topics including leadership, community involvement and current affairs. The Glen Innes Lions Club recently hosted its annual Lions Youth of the Year event, proudly led by Chairperson Lion Terry te Velde. Four talented students from Glen Innes High School — Azalea Singh, Ilyssa Newbury, Jayden McIntyre, and William Lynn — impressed judges and guests alike with their confidence, intellect, and poise. In 1934 Dr Fred Buddee who held a Bachelor of Medicine, Master of Surgery, and was a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, bought Dr Gerard Gall’s medical practice. Fred and Margaret Buddee had six children Barbara, Wallis, Bill, (who followed his father into medicine), Margaret, Donald, and David. Their property, ‘Strawberry Hills’ of 500 acres was managed by Lloyd Rees. Dr Buddee took over Dalhousie Maternity Hospital in the late 1930s and added a three-bed ward in 1941 and from 1947 the hospital rented Dalhousie from him as their separate maternity unit.
