Tai Chi – The Gentle Martial Art For Everyone

That includes You!

Tai Chi has been practiced in China for thousands of years and has a dedicated following here in Glen Innes. Each Wednesday, from 10.00am to 11.00 am, in the East Avenue Guide Hall, Cathy Sexton uses her extensive knowledge of this exercise form, teaching participants the Sun Lu-Tang form.

Cathy moved from Queensland to Glen Innes with her husband, Chris,18 years ago and purchased The Blue Sapphire Caravan Park. After the local Tai Chi teacher left Glen Innes, Cathy decided to use her skills to offer Tai Chi classes to the community for approximately 4 years. Now fully retired, Cathy reintroduced Tai Chi into Glen Innes over a year ago. The first lesson is free and then classes are charged at the rate of $10 per lesson.

Cathy, a former nurse, is a fully qualified Certified Trainer in Tai Chi for Health, learnt under Dr. Paul Lam of the Australian Academy for Tai Chi Sydney Institute. This gentle flowing movement is based on enhancing co-ordination, balance, posture, breathing and calmness and is often referred to as
‘moving meditation’. Don’t be fooled, when you first take up Tai Chi, you’ll know you have completed a full work-out after the first class! The slowness of the movements is closely linked to resistance training. It is suitable for everyone, young and old, all genders and is the physiotherapy of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Tai Chi is a low-impact, weight bearing exercise and can be practiced by people of all ages, all levels of fitness and requires no previous experience in any other sport. Cathy’s Glen Innes class includes two experienced practicing Karate devotees, those who do no other exercise at all, dancers and walkers. A seated version of all the movements is available for those recuperating from surgery or impeded in their general mobility.

Tai Chi is included in the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and is an Olympic sport.
