Vicious Storm Hits Glen

Let’s talk about the weather…. Friday’s storm

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has been forecasting  it for days, the hope of a few mm here a few mm there … but little showers have skirted by Glen without anything to show.

It came down this Friday afternoon as a thick band of dark, menacing cloud  came in from the west.  At its height, ferocious winds, torrential rain and horizontal hail.

The GI weather station recorded in excess of 38mm but recordings varied enormously but what everyone agreed upon was the ferocity over such a short time span.  Hail from pea to 20c coin and some to golf ball size belted down shredding vegetable gardens and defoliating trees, the hail blocked gutters and water backed up and entered homes down the inside of walls. Some laser light roofs were badly pocked.

For cars parked outside there were numerous reports of significant  damage including broken windows, wing mirrors and skylights to total write offs. Even the wildlife was targeted, with  a flock of corellas  badly hurt near Bradley’s Lane.

The NSW SES received over 50 calls for assistance. SES teams were sent from Tamworth, Tenterfield, Tingha and Armidale assisting our local volunteers.

Hail covered the ground and could still be found against fences and buildings hours later.
