The old woolshed at Deepwater Station resonated with the sounds of classical music on Sunday 26 October before an audience of over 100 music lovers from across the New England. The concert was the New England Conservatorium of Music’s third and final event in its Homestead Series for 2025, after concerts held earlier in the year at Rosecroft and Waterloo Station. The Homestead Series supports music education at small schools including schools in the Glen Innes area.

This glorious afternoon of music was performed by James Chen – violin; Annabelle Swainston – violin; Robert van Gend – viola; Caleb Murray – cello and James McKay flute/clarinet. The concert included works by Telemann, Brahms, Glazunov and Bartok. One of the delights of concerts in the Homestead Series is that the musicians provide background stories to the pieces that they are about to play and on this occasion introductions to less well known instruments, some from the Baroque era, which were used in the performance. The concert closed with Puccini’s very popular aria “O mio babbino caro” (which translates to “Oh my dear papa”) from his opera Gianni Schicchi. Afterwards the musicians and audience members mingled over drinks and refreshments in this very historic location.
