The Glen Innes Tennis Club (GIDTA) were pleased to host the Glen Innes round of the JDS North West RMS series on Sunday 27th July. There was an excellent turn out for the tournament with players from across the North West region. While the weather was a bit chilly, there was plenty of hot food and a warm welcome in the clubhouse which was appreciated by players and spectators alike. Although the temperatures were cool, there was very high quality tennis played all day.
The club was thrilled to see a good number of local players enter with six Junior and one Opens player plus two ex-local Juniors (George Claxton from Armidale and Rebekah Schafer from Tamworth) entering the tournament. All local players did the club proud with excellent sportsmanship shown and some great tennis played in all events. Three Glen Innes juniors received runner-up trophies: Lorelei Clifton in U8 Girls, Ted Smith in U8 Boys and Max Polschek in U12 Boys. The Opens Mixed trophy was hotly contested with local player Angus Lane reaching the semi-final but losing to the eventual winner (Zach Lewis, Uralla) – all of the Opens matches were played at an extremely high level and kept spectators glued to the action despite the cold winds and sleet/showers during the late afternoon.
GIDTA thanks all the club volunteers for help running the event and the competitors/supporters for making it a great day.

In other news, Tuesday Social Tennis remains well supported with a great roll-up enjoying fun tennis and friendly conversation on court. This week they were joined by a very energetic bunch of kids and parents from the Glen Innes Home School Group who took the opportunity to enjoy the facilities while practising some tennis skills.
Hot Shots For Juniors has unfortunately been rained out for the first two weekends of this school term but hopefully the weather will be a bit kinder as the term progresses. The club has more exciting things planned for the rest of the year – they encourage anyone interested in tennis to view the website (gleninnestennis.com) and Facebook page for up to date news.
