New Year’s Eve, or Hogmanay

New Year’s Eve, or Hogmanay

Australians will be celebrating New Year’s Eve by staying up until midnight and letting off fireworks – or maybe just getting an early night and sleeping through it all.  It’s interesting to know that our Scottish cousins will be doing similar things, although there are some special traditional celebrations that might seem a little surprising to us. In Scotland, New Year’s Eve is known as Hogmanay, from the Scots language, or Oidhche Challain in Gaelic.  Many parts of Scotland, particularly the islands to the west and north, continued to use the Julian calendar for a century or more after the…

Four Tamworth Awards Nominations For Local Muso

Glencoe resident and musician, Matt Scullion, has been nominated for four awards at the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January 2025, two of them in the People’s Choice and two in the Tamworth Songwriter’s Association Awards. The nominations are for a song he wrote and recorded about Northern Territory icon, Ted Egan. Matt’s song, Beer Box Man, documents Ted’s musical journey.  When Matt originally opted to write a song about Ted, he re-read his autobiography, Outback Songman: My Life, and also met with the legendary Alice Springs resident.  Matt found that there were so many aspects to Ted and his…

Emmaville Mining Museum Hours Change, A Callout For Volunteers

Emmaville Mining Museum Hours Change, A Callout For Volunteers

The Emmaville Mining Museum is a true gem (if you’ll pardon the pun) of the tourist experiences that are offered in the Glen Innes area. The dream of the late Mr and Mrs Jack Curnow, who bequeathed a vast mineral collection to the Emmaville community, was the hope of opening a museum in the town. These days the museum is also home to the Jillet, Gilbey, Ellis, Schumacher, Trethewey, Hermann and Maskey collections. In all, there are over 4,000 mineral and gem specimens as well as a General Store museum, a replica blacksmith’s shop, and an old wood-fired bakery. The…

A Christmas Message From Local Church Leaders

We approached the leaders of churches in the Glen Innes region and asked them to provide a Christmas message - here they are ‘God, I don’t get it … I don’t get You …’ Ever felt like that? Asked God that?  I have. Facing another heartbreaking drought … Standing at an open grave … Stunned at the specialist results … a phone call that changes everything … Mary and Joseph must have asked those questions.  A week’s travel to Bethlehem. And Mary was 9 months. A donkey for Mary? The Bible doesn’t say. No room in the inn. And no…

A Few Celtic Christmas Traditions

A Few Celtic Christmas Traditions

There are many Christmas traditions that are particular to one or more of the Celtic regions.  Obviously, none of them goes back beyond the Christian period, which we can say started in the Celtic regions around the fourth century.  It is likely that, before Christianity, and indeed during its earliest period, the Celtic regions celebrated midwinter in various ways, and some of those celebrations have probably been absorbed into Christian traditions. The practice of placing a ring of holly on a front door may have started in Ireland. Holly was one of the main plants that flourished at Christmas time…
