As winter sets in, it’s easy to fall into a routine of cozy slippers, oversized sweatpants, binge-watching television, and indulging in hearty comfort foods. But who says we need to surrender to these seasonal habits?
Why do colder months so often lead to a decline in healthy routines? Instead of settling into hibernation mode, it’s worth rethinking how we approach winter—and how a shift in mindset can keep us physically active and energised.
Here are Emily’s five HOT tips to help you stay motivated and moving during the colder months:
1. Layer Up
Exercise naturally raises your body temperature, often making it feel warmer than it actually is—leading to sweat even on chilly days. The solution? Dress in layers. Wear breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics that can be added or removed as your body heats up or cools down.
2. Don’t Forget to Hydrate
Colder weather can dull your sense of thirst, but that doesn’t mean your body needs less water. You’re still losing fluids during exercise—just in less obvious ways. Stay mindful about drinking water before, during, and after your workouts to maintain proper hydration.
3. Find a Workout Buddy or Join a Group Class
Struggling to stay committed? Team up with a friend or join a group class. You’re far less likely to skip a session when someone else is counting on you. Having a workout partner—or being part of a group—helps keep you accountable and more motivated. Plus, everything—from an early morning walk to an evening fitness class—is more enjoyable when you’re sharing the experience.
4. Switch Things Up
Shorter days can limit your outdoor time, so consider moving your workout to your lunch break to take advantage of daylight. If the weather’s uncooperative, head indoors. Bored of your current routine? Try a new class like Pilates or join a local running club for fresh motivation.
5. Warm Up—Inside and Out
A proper warm-up is essential year-round, but it’s especially important in winter. Dynamic warm-ups boost circulation and raise your muscle temperature, reducing the risk of injury and helping your body perform better in cold conditions.
Bottom line: Winter doesn’t have to put your health and fitness goals on ice. With the right mindset—and a few strategic adjustments—you can stay active, energised, and motivated all season long.
