The Glen Innes Opportunity Shop continues to serve as a well-known and respected part of the local community, offering affordable second-hand goods while supporting a wide range of charitable initiatives.
Operated entirely by volunteers, the shop follows its mission statement: “turning donated goods into good donations.” All proceeds are distributed to local organisations across the Glen Innes area, supporting services such as aged care, disability assistance, education, and emergency relief.
The origins of the shop date back to 1916. Originally known as the Wartime Tearooms and Comfort Fund, it was established to raise funds for our soldiers serving overseas. Initially located beside the Glen Innes Town Hall, the shop was run entirely by women. Following the Second World War, it was renamed and has continued to operate as one of the few surviving locally organised, volunteer-run op shops in the country.
Over the decades, the shop has faced and overcome numerous challenges, including several relocations and a devastating fire in 1961. Despite these events, it has remained a strong and reliable presence in the community.
Today, the shop is located on Lang Street and opens six days a week. It is colloquially known as the “red flag,” in reference to the red flag traditionally flown outside the building to signal that it is open for business. The shop accepts donations of clothing, furniture, toys, homewares, and other quality saleable items, which are then offered to the public at affordable prices.
Proceeds from these sales are distributed each year to a wide variety of charities and service providers in Glen Innes and the wider area, continuing the shop’s long-standing tradition of community support.
The Glen Innes Opportunity Shop is a non-profit organisation and is a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
Next year the “Op Shop” will be celebrating 110 years of delivering an almost continuous service to the wider Glen Innes community.
With over a century of operation, the Glen Innes Opportunity Shop remains a valued part of the town’s social fabric, offering practical support to residents and organisations through the power of volunteerism and generosity.
