Golf Recap: Glen Innes and Deepwater Swing into Action

It has been an eventful few weeks on the fairways for local golfers, with Glen Innes and Deepwater clubs hosting competitions, fundraisers, and planning for future events.

Glen Innes Ladies Tee Off for a Cause
Eighteen ladies took part in a Stableford competition at Glen Innes Golf Club, playing for the Bobby Woods Trophy while raising funds for cancer support. The day was generously organised by Leta Kempton and Nancy Kiehne, with a lunch served after play.

Lindy Newsome claimed top honours with a solid round of 34 points, edging out Pru Newby who finished close behind on 33 points. Rosie Smith took home the Pro Pin for nearest the pin on the 7th.

A random draw was held with the men’s competition to determine the best mixed team combination, with Joan Hutton and Greg Law emerging as the winning duo. The event raised a total of $558 for Can Assist Glen Innes. Special thanks were extended to Gale Stone and Judy Maunder for preparing lunch, and to all the golfers who contributed to the day.

Veterans Enjoy Friendly Conditions and Strong Competition
A field of 26 players turned out for Veterans Golf, taking advantage of fine weather and increased prize money. Rod Kiehne led the pack with bonus points putting him in first place, while Doug Stevenson followed as runner-up.

In the nett division, Brian Hansell posted an impressive 38 points to take the win, narrowly beating Graham Price with 37. Price also claimed nearest the pin on the 4th, while Greg Constantine was closest on the 12th and took out the Super Six prize.

Looking ahead, a reciprocal visit to Grafton Golf Club is scheduled for Tuesday 29 July. Glen Innes players are encouraged to take part, with Grafton known for their strong support of the Clayden Shield.

Social Golfers Make the Most of Autumn Sunshine
Eleven Social Club members enjoyed fine autumn conditions as they played the front nine recently. John Stewart took out the win on a countback from Dean Gillett, with both players returning nett 21. Col Fletcher finished third with a nett 22.

In the putting competition, Fletcher edged out Stewart on countback after both recorded 15 putts. Nearest the pin on the 3rd (4th shot) went to Dean Gillett, and Michael Johansen claimed the 7th.

Jamie Tatterall received the Bradman’s award, while Jim Wilson was dubbed the T/Bird for the round. Lucky draws went to Col Fletcher and Bob Roselan — a welcome return to the winner’s circle for Fletch.

Next Sunday, the Social Golf Club returns to the back nine, with nearest the pins on the 11th (3rd shot) and the 14th (2nd shot). With cooler conditions forecast, players are encouraged to come along and enjoy another relaxed round.
