 One of Australia’s oldest racing traditions is set to thunder back into life this summer, with the Deepwater Hotel Top Pub Race Meeting celebrating an extraordinary 161 years on Saturday, 24 January 2026. First run in 1865, the Deepwater Races are steeped in history. The event began when Emmanuel Barratt, owner of the then Deepwater Hotel, and his friend William Thomas Cadell of Deepwater Station hatched the idea of holding a horse race on the station grounds. Erosion to Emmaville Golf Club’s course has made accessing the fairways difficult but that is about to change with Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan delivering a grant for repairs and upgrades. $35,090 from the Community Building Partnership program will go towards levelling out a very eroded gully players have to cross. Competing in the Southern Cross Feeds EA Australasian Show Horse and Rider Championships Lali brought home the Intermediate rider 12,13,14 years Champion representing NSW and  riding Kolbeach Cowboy, owned by Lali. The 14th Annual CSC Working Stock Dog Auction was held at Glencoe on 1 November with Gwydir Fire account Tony Overton of Walcha selling the top priced dog to Pat McMahon of Killarney QLD. Pat McMahon, who is a beef producer, finisher and meat retailer said it takes regular, consistent work to train a stock dog and he takes his hat to Tony Overton for his talent to achieve this. Excerpts from a long article by the Examiner Special Correspondent, March 1,1920.... ‘As far back as 1878 Red Range consisted of a small store and dwelling, owner by Mr Trotter. A few settlers had come here on the properties once included in Shannon Vale Station - amongst them being Messrs D Pogson, Jno Marshall, J Taylor, Cheney and J Heaney.
