Glen Innes Health Hub Draws Hundreds in Opening Month

Glen Innes Health Hub Draws Hundreds in Opening Month

The Glen Innes Health Hub has officially opened its doors, with hundreds of appointments booked in its first month—a strong indication of the local demand for accessible, coordinated health services. Located at 293 Grey Street, the Health Hub is the result of a community-led collaboration, developed under the Comprehensive Approach to Rural Engagement (CARE) Model—part of the Better Health for the Bush Framework. The initiative is being piloted by the Hunter New England and Central Coast Primary Health Network (HNECC PHN) and is one of two innovative models of care currently being trialled in regional Australia. A Warm Welcome for Essential Workers

A Warm Welcome for Essential Workers

Pagan Kelly is the dynamic Community Connector at Local Connect Glen Innes, which delivers The Welcome Experience - a service designed to attract and retain essential workers in regional NSW. It is a simple proposition, as Pagan puts it “Success to me looks like people coming and staying in our community”. However this is not without its challenges. By way of background, The Welcome Experience is a NSW Government funded initiative which is delivered to 55 Local Government Areas. The Local Connect team for the Northern New England Region comprises Executive Manager, Margot Davis and Community Connectors Pagan Kelly in…

A Pelican in the Wind: A Story of Survival and Second Chances

A Pelican in the Wind: A Story of Survival and Second Chances

Growing up on the outskirts of Sydney, my childhood was spent in a bush suburb—a pocket of nature perched on a plateau. My sister and I always seemed to attract wildlife, as if we had an invisible beacon calling to animals in need. Homeless, injured, or struggling creatures somehow found their way to us for comfort and recuperation. When I moved to Glen Innes with my own family, I found myself having similar encounters, which inspired me to join WIRES (Wildlife Information and Rescue Service). Sadly, I had noticed many animals struck by cars and left on the roadside, a…

Lights, Sirens, Storytime! Glen Innes Keeps Reading Rolling

Glen Innes primary school students and their parents/carers will have a new activity these school holidays, thanks to an initiative of Public School librarian, Ms Katie Randall. Ms Randall told the News that she had been thrilled with the participation in a recent community activity associated with the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) which is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Vale Roy Wells: Emmaville Mourns Loss of a Local Legend

The Emmaville community is mourning the loss of Roy Colin Wells, who has passed away aged 102. Roy will be remembered as a proud World War Two veteran, loving family man, and one of the region’s most respected elders. Born in Emmaville, Roy worked in the tin mines before enlisting in the Australian Army. He served from 1941 to 1946 and was deployed to the Solomon Islands. After the war, he returned home and worked in a wide range of roles — fencer, wool classer, rabbit trapper, fox shooter, and miner. Roy and his wife Edna, affectionately referred to as…

Light Poles Restored as Part of Glen Innes Beautification Project

Light Poles Restored as Part of Glen Innes Beautification Project

The Glen Innes Severn Council has completed restoration works on light poles at the Meade Street and Bourke Street roundabouts along Grey Street. The works, which began on 18 March 2025, involved the temporary removal of both poles to undergo sandblasting, repainting, and polishing. Council noted that these measures were essential to preserve the poles as long-standing heritage and memorial features of the town centre. "We recognise the significance of these fixtures – the light pole on Meade Street is mounted to the ANZAC memorial, while the one on Bourke Street features a heritage theme," Council stated earlier this year.…

Our Local History – Stannum Bush Nursing Hospital

Our Local History – Stannum Bush Nursing Hospital

On May 15, 1937, The Glen Innes Examiner ran this report from the Inspector and Organiser of the Bush Nursing Association: "...Nine miles from Deepwater lies the township of Stannum, tin mining being the main industry. "This part does well when water is plentiful, and the price of tin is high, otherwise the men are out of work with all its serious consequences. "The police patrols of Deepwater and Torrington each have over 1,000 people without a medical officer or even a trained nurse. So Stannum makes a good centre [for a Bush Nursing Hospital] for these districts, nine miles…

Not Just for Bookworms: Glen Innes Library

Today’s public libraries have much more on offer than traditional reading materials like books, not that there is anything wrong with books of course! Increasingly libraries need to re-imagine their offerings to maintain their relevance to readers of all ages and their contribution to a community’s cultural and learning opportunities, as exemplified by new offerings at our own Glen Innes Severn Public Library. Over the past 12 months Glen Innes Library has increased its number of visitors and members by 16% and 7% respectively.
