Kindy 2025: A New Chapter Begins

Kindy 2025: A New Chapter Begins

Thursday 6th February 2025 was a momentous day for dozens of small children across the district, as they entered the world of big school for the first time with its promise of greater learning and lifelong friendships. With local schools ranging significantly in size, some children made up 50% of their two student Kindergarten class, while others in bigger schools joined one of two Kindergarten classes. Luckily our teachers are prepared for anything! Do you remember your first day at school? We ran a quick survey of our own memories of that all-important day. Several remembered what they ate; somebody…

Our Local History: St Josephs Convent

Our Local History: St Josephs Convent

St Joseph’s Convent, that magnificent Edwardian Gothic edifice built 108 years ago and relinquished by the Church in 1995, is on the market again. I will quote just a scrap of its history from the Glen Innes Examiner of October 15, 1917, under the heading ‘A Triumph of Architectural Genius’: “…The first Sisters of the Order of St Joseph came from Adelaide and accompanied by Bishop Torreggiani arrived by coach in Glen Innes on 15th January 1884 … They intended to establish a first-class school straightaway, but owing to insufficient accommodation they were compelled to restrict their operations - however…

Catherine’s Story: from a Childhood on the Isle of Skye to Life in the Colony of New South Wales

Catherine’s Story: from a Childhood on the Isle of Skye to Life in the Colony of New South Wales

Self-publishing books about one’s ancestors is an increasingly popular pastime. In many cases, it gives unrelated people with an interest in local history or broader social history the real treat of a thoroughly-researched insight into the past. Catherine’s Story, by Gail Barnes, is one of those cases. Barnes is the great-great-granddaughter of Catherine McKinnon-McDonald-Ballard of the book’s title. This is primarily a work of family history, but it is of considerable interest for those interested in the history of the Glen Innes district, or indeed in the history of nineteenth-century migration to Australia. Catherine was thirteen years old in 1837,…

Sciatica: Symptoms and Solutions

Sciatica: Symptoms and Solutions

What is sciatica? "Sciatica" is an umbrella term used to describe leg pain that originates from the lower back (lumbar spine). Traditionally, sciatica was thought to specifically relate to an irritation of the sciatic nerve caused by it being "pinched" or "compressed" as it exits the spine. However, this is now considered a quite primitive and reductionist definition, as we now understand people can experience sciatica symptoms for a number of other reasons that don't involve a true compression of the nerve itself. Signs and symptoms You may be suffering from sciatica if you experience: - pain that feels sharp,…

Here’s Cheers to 50 Years for Tyrepower Glen Innes

Small businesses are the backbone of a rural community. Without them, access to goods and services would be severely limited and people would have to travel long distances to acquire what they need. Tyrepower Glen Innes is one example of a flourishing small business in this town. And 2025 is a special year for Tyrepower as they reach some important milestones. This year marks an amazing fifty years in the tyre and mechanical industry for the Cave family in Glen Innes, as well as thirty-one years for Matt Cave employed in and then owning the business. In 1975, Allan and…

Council To Investigate Local Clean Energy And Carbon Technology

At the most recent Ordinary Council meeting, Glen Innes Severn Council approved a motion directing council officers to prepare a report outlining the potential costs, benefits, and risks of investing in or forming a public-private partnership with local technology innovator, Seata. Seata, who have their research and development centre on West Furracabad Road in Glen Innes, have developed clean energy and carbon sequestration technology that uses advanced thermal treatment of carbon-based wastes diverted from landfill into valuable commodities. This patented carbon negative technology has the potential of locking up carbon in the form of Biochar, producing a synthetic gas (Syngas)…
