The June 2025 weekend of the 27th and 28th will be remembered by all who attended as a weekend of celebration and 50 years of Elks rugby in Glen Innes. Australian rugby CEO Phil Waugh extended his congratulations to all who participated and commended the club on achieving the 50 year anniversary. Glen Innes Rugby Union Club Celebrates 50 Years

The Glen Innes Elks Rugby Club will celebrate 50 years of continuous rugby since reforming in 1975. Whilst records show that rugby union was first played in Glen Innes in 1880 it has had a chequered start over the years with many starts, including combining with rugby league in 1931. However, under the guidance of Don Hall - the president in 1975 - the club has not looked back since this time, playing continuously for the last 50 years. Three talented players from local rugby team the Glen Innes Elks represented the Pacific Nomads at the Crescent Head 7s over the weekend. Sarah Byrne, Ash Richardson, and Tilly Mitchell all took the field for the Nomads and put in a strong performance, narrowly missing out on a place in the Women's Cup semi-final after a hard-fought 10-12 loss to four-time defending champions, Nelson Bay. One of Glen’s female superstars of local junior rugby is Lily Grieve. This weekend (14/15 December), she makes her debut for the NSW Waratahs U18 team in the girls’ Provincial Tri-Series in Sydney.
