Seventy years ago, in April 1955 after his invention developed from killed polio virus had been tested in one of the largest clinical trials in history, American virologist Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was officially declared ‘safe, effective and potent’. It was an unprecedented scientific breakthrough in the control of the spread of one of the most dreaded diseases of the 20th century. Budget Confirms Funding for Glen Innes Hospital Upgrade

The NSW State Budget, handed down on Tuesday 24 June, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the redevelopment of Glen Innes Hospital. Of the $50 million total project budget, approximately $11.1 million has already been spent — likely on planning, design, and early works, including the demolition of the old nurses' quarters. A further $6.2 million has been allocated for the 2025–26 financial year to continue the project’s rollout. Permanent Tribute Unveiled for Respected Glen Innes Community Member

A permanent bench honouring the late Jan Sharman OAM has been unveiled outside Glen Innes Hospital, commemorating her decades of service to the local community. Ms Sharman, who passed away last year, was a long-standing and highly respected member of the Glen Innes Branch of the United Hospital Auxiliary. She held several roles within the organisation, including president, patron and life member. The bench, purchased by the auxiliary, is intended to provide a resting place for people who may find the walk to the hospital challenging. Investigation Into Death Of Child Continues

An investigation is continuing into the death of a child at a home in Glen Innes on the weekend. About 6.40am (Sunday 30 March 2025), emergency services were called to a home on Hunter Street, Glen Innes, after an 11-month-old boy was found unresponsive. NSW Ambulance paramedics took the child to Glen Innes Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. While not being treated as suspicious, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death is now being conducted by detectives attached to New England Police District. A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

Police Seek Witnesses to Two-Vehicle Crash on New England Highway

New England Police are calling for witnesses following a two-vehicle collision on the New England Highway near Grafton Street, Glen Innes, yesterday morning. Emergency services responded to the incident at around 11 am, where they found a Toyota utility had overturned and landed on its roof after colliding with a Toyota SUV. The occupants of the ute, a 61-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, sustained minor cuts and were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being transported to Armidale Hospital for further care.
