Elena Weatherall is the CEO of the Glen Innes Local Aboriginal Land Council, a role she took on 11 months ago. Local Area Land Councils [LALC] are part of the network of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council. Its purpose is to acquire land through claim or purchase, establish commercial enterprises to support a sustainable economic base for Aboriginal communities and to maintain and enhance Aboriginal culture and heritage. Glen Innes Severn Council is set to celebrate Youth Week 2025 with a range of activities from 9 to 17 April. The program, coordinated by The Youth Booth, will offer young people opportunities to participate in fun and skill-building events, connect with their peers, and engage with their community. Glen Innes first Annual Fishing & Pigging Competition is taking place between 11 and 27 April 2025. Designed to get kids off the streets and back to the bush to develop bush skills and to promote mental health, teams of four people have until Tuesday 1 April to enter. Barnaby states in his opinion piece in your last issue that "If a boy is over school .... then they should consider going into trade and work etc. As a former TAFE teacher I think clarification is required on entry level requirements. Member for Northern Tablelands, Brendan Moylan, has called for a Parliamentary inquiry into maternity services in rural and regional areas of New South Wales. On Wednesday, Mr Moylan submitted a Notice of Motion in the NSW Parliament, urging the government to explore bundled funding for maternity care, establish an advisory group on rural health, and commission an inquiry into maternity services in regional NSW. “Country mums, particularly those in the Northern Tablelands, deserve the opportunity to give birth in their hometowns,” Mr Moylan said. New England Police are investigating a collision between a utility vehicle and a cow on the New England Highway yesterday morning. Emergency services were called to the scene near Glencoe, south of Glen Innes, at approximately 6:30 am following reports that a utility had struck a cow. The driver, a 63-year-old man, sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics. The cow was euthanised at the site of the incident. Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collision are ongoing.
The Glen Innes Highlands Lioness Lions Club has awarded its first-ever Post-Secondary Education Scholarship, valued at over $2,000, to Lottie Marr-Spillman. Lottie, who will be undertaking university studies in Education at Charles Sturt University’s Port Macquarie campus, was selected as the inaugural recipient of the scholarship. The club has long been dedicated to supporting young people in the local community. In 2023, members were able to assist a student transitioning to university, which became the catalyst for establishing the scholarship fund as an ongoing annual project.
