Federal and State MPs have hit out at the NSW State Government and the Australian Federal Government after it was announced the funding for the New England Rail Trail had been cut. State Member for Northern Tablelands, Brendan Moylan said: “I have been pushing for more funding so it is incredibly disappointing to hear there will be cuts made to the Northern Tablelands. Without funding we won’t have the ability to complete projects, improve facilities and upgrade equipment which are so important to regional areas. Whether you were for or against the Rail Trail, the reality is Mr Minns and…

Attempts are being made to revive a Saturday or Sunday cricket competition in Glen Innes. A sport which was extremely strong in the town in the past, has fallen by the wayside in recent times. Where Glen Innes once had a number of club, pub and business teams competing, including a team from the Correctional Centre, and where Glen Innes once had players who starred in district and regional teams, organisers are struggling to have their mid-week 20/20 competition attract more than four teams. This Friday evening at 5pm a competition comprises one side made up mainly of members from…
La Belle Époque, a new exhibition at the Glen Innes Library curated by William (Bill) Rendell, offers a fascinating exploration of this vibrant historical period. On Tuesday evening November 26, 2024, attendees at the William Gardener conference room were taken on an enlightening journey from the dawn of the era, at the end of the Franco-Prussian war, to its conclusion, marked by the outbreak of World War I. When studying ancient societies like Egypt or Rome, we rely on archaeological discoveries to reconstruct their histories. For more recent eras, we benefit from an abundance of written records, preserved buildings, artworks,…
The Glen Innes leg of the New England Rail Trail project is now unlikely to go ahead, with the funding of $8.7 million having been cut by the state government Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). The reason given for pulling the funding was missed project deadlines, but Council say that state government departments caused the delays by stalling essential approvals for over a year. Glen Innes Severn Council has said that the irony is stark: the very environmental impact investigations cited as incomplete were delayed by the same government agencies now using them as a reason to…
On Saturday 16 November, guests sipping wine and nibbling canapes gathered round the garden courtyard at the museum to be delighted by the fashion parade, curated by Astrid Scheer, of elegant frocks of the1950s and 1960s from the Margaret McIntosh Collection. It was an example of the Museum’s important function of collecting, preserving and disseminating the history of the town and district. Margaret nee Coventry had married Colin McIntosh in 1951, and they lived at Clarevaulx. The McIntosh family generously donated a collection of frocks, ball gowns, hats, handbags and shoes. Some of the frocks had been made by Miss…
