Our Local History – Stannum Bush Nursing Hospital

Our Local History – Stannum Bush Nursing Hospital

On May 15, 1937, The Glen Innes Examiner ran this report from the Inspector and Organiser of the Bush Nursing Association: "...Nine miles from Deepwater lies the township of Stannum, tin mining being the main industry. "This part does well when water is plentiful, and the price of tin is high, otherwise the men are out of work with all its serious consequences. "The police patrols of Deepwater and Torrington each have over 1,000 people without a medical officer or even a trained nurse. So Stannum makes a good centre [for a Bush Nursing Hospital] for these districts, nine miles…

Community Profile – Wrap with Love

A chance meeting on a train nearly twenty years ago lead to the establishment of a Glen Innes chapter of Wrap with Love.  Apparently, the person involved asked another passenger what they were crocheting.  When the other passenger told them what they were doing, the Glen Innes resident felt that Glen Innes could become a part of this process.  Glen Innes Wrap with Love started off with two participants.  And so it has continued in an unbroken stream from then until now. The participants of Wrap with Love meet on Wednesdays between 11-3 in the Library Meeting Room.  They crochet…

The Northern Tablelands Wether Trial has once again proven its value as a benchmarking tool for wool producers, with the 2022–2024 trial wrapped up and results now available. Held at the Glen Innes Agricultural Research and Advisory Station, the trial continues a tradition that began in 1979, evolving alongside the industry while staying grounded in its core purpose: to help producers evaluate and improve their merino flocks. Over three years, 24 teams of wethers were run as a single mob and assessed annually for wool and carcass value. One Meeting, Two Outcomes: Council Cancels Its Own Pay Decision

A plan for Glen Innes Severn councillors to take a pay cut and donate the savings to a local charity was approved—then overturned—all in the same meeting. At the 19 June council meeting, councillors first voted in favour of reducing their pay to the lowest level allowed by law and giving the difference to the Glen Innes & District Community Centre. The plan, proposed by Cr Scott, would have seen nearly $43,000 donated over the next year to help support local people doing it tough. The original proposal was for councillors to be paid about $3,400 less for the year,…
