The June 2025 weekend of the 27th and 28th will be remembered by all who attended as a weekend of celebration and 50 years of Elks rugby in Glen Innes. Australian rugby CEO Phil Waugh extended his congratulations to all who participated and commended the club on achieving the 50 year anniversary. Students from Years 3 to 6 at St Joseph’s Primary School travelled to Inverell on Wednesday 25 June to participate in the Toni Palmer Memorial Shield Rugby League competition. All students who took part represented their school with enthusiasm and sportsmanship, enjoying a day of competition and camaraderie. The Glen Innes Elks Rugby Club will celebrate 50 years of continuous rugby since reforming in 1975. Whilst records show that rugby union was first played in Glen Innes in 1880 it has had a chequered start over the years with many starts, including combining with rugby league in 1931. Cricketers in Glen Innes now have access to improved training facilities following the completion of upgrades to the cricket nets at the Glen Innes Indoor Sports Centre. The project, funded through the Australian Government’s Black Summer Bushfire Recovery (BSBR) Glen Innes Indoor Sports Centre Stage Three initiative, included a range of enhancements to the indoor cricket area, with a total project value of $124,178. The fourth annual goodnessgravel riding event was another outstanding success. 135 riders experienced the local sights as part of a weekend cycling event at Glen Innes on Saturday 12th April 2025. An Australian bike event company, goodnessgravel, in partnership with the Glen Innes Severn Council, hosted this gravel riding mini-festival.
